PROFILE
Following his then coach and mentor to Australia, pole vaulter Viktor left his hometown of Moscow, Russia for Adelaide, Australia in 1996. In 1999 he raised his personal best jump to 5.90m and was preparing to make his international debut wearing Australian colours at the World Championships. Unfortunately he suffered poison only a couple days before the competition and was forced to pulled out and was confined to bed for the duration of the championships.

His solid season in '99, which included 4 jumps at 5.80m or higher, was good preparation for the 2000 Olympics where he finishing equal fifth, leaping a seasons best of 5.80m. During his best domestic season ever he cleared 5.77m in his hometown in 2002. Selected for his first Commonwealth Games in '02, Viktor's mixed season continued at the Games where he placed equal 4th.
